On offer is an original archive of handwritten and typed manuscripts, letters, documents, ephemera and papers being the personal files of one of the 20th century\'s most celebrated, notable and influential women Ms. Oriana Fallaci, a prolific writer and author and a world renowned interviewer and journalist, [a term she loathed to define her work] and in her later years a true heroine fighting on the front lines of the War on Terror speaking out against terrorism, islamofascism and shariah law.

As an author she is held in high esteem among the likes of Hemingway and Malraux. As an interviewer her subjects included Henry Kissinger, Willy Brandt, the Ayatollah Khomeini, and the late Pakistani leader Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, from whom she extracted such criticism of India\'s Indira Gandhi that a 1972 peace treaty between the two countries almost went unsigned.

She also interviewed Norman Mailer, Sean Connery, Ingrid Bergman, Nguyen Cao Ky, H. Rap Brown, Geraldine Chaplin, Hugh Hefner, Fererico Fellini, Sammy Davis Jr, Anna Magnani, Jeanne Moreau, Dean Martin, Duchess of Alba, Alfred Hitchcock, Mary Hemingway, El Cordobes to name a few. There are thousands of pages; most held inside file folders categorized by subject.

This archive also includes Ms. Fallaci\'s personal research materials and handwritten notes. She retained duplicates of her outgoing letter in her own files and as such there are copies to be found of her handwritten and typed letters. The scope and breadth of this collection is far too wide to describe in detail enough to do it justice given there are over 50 pounds of papers.

This archive should also include interesting correspondence as Ms. Fallaci was known for being rather spirited and in some instances could be quite scathing with letters strewn with angry epithets and insulting comments are likely to be found. This is a very unique opportunity to find so large an archive of one of the worlds most celebrated and enigmatic women of the late 20th century.

A true Renaissance woman, who traveled the world routinely and on any given day even she herself was unsure where she might be heading next. Though she has written novels and memoirs, Italian author Oriana Fallaci remains best known as an uncompromising political interviewer, or, as Elizabeth Mehren puts it in the Los Angeles Times, \"the journalist to whom virtually no world figure would say no.\"

Already as famous as many of the figures she interviews, Fallaci is a freethinker passionately committed to her craft. \"I do not feel myself to be, nor will I ever succeed in feeling like, a cold recorder of what I see and hear,\" she writes in the preface to Interview with History. \"On every professional experience I leave shreds of my heart and soul; and I participate in what I see or hear as though the matter concerned me personally and were one on which I ought to take a stand (in fact I always take one, based on a specific moral choice).\"

While Fallaci\'s morality has seldom been questioned, her interviewing techniques are highly controversial. According to New York Times Book Review contributor Francine du Plessix Gray, Fallaci combines \"the psychological insight of a great novelist and the irreverence of a bratty quiz kid.\" Known for her abrasive interviewing tactics, Fallaci often goads her subjects into revelations. \"Let\'s talk about war,\" she challenged Henry Kissinger in their 1972 interview.

Ci siamo conosciuti, Oriana e io, poco dopo la fine della guerra. A Firenze, visto che eravamo entrambi fiorentini. Oriana era minuta, bellina, e molto attraente. Colpiva subito per la straordinaria vitalità, per l\'energia, per la risolutezza. Spiccò il volo da Firenze molto presto, molto prima di me. Per parecchio tempo ci siamo persi di vista. Poi ci siamo ritrovati a New York, dove io ero alla Columbia University e Oriana aveva preso casa (per pura combinazione a trenta metri da quella di Ugo Stille), e si era finalmente accasata; ci stava davvero.

Si era fatta, come inviato speciale, tutte le guerre del dopoguerra. Tra queste anche la prima guerra del Golfo, la guerra di George Bush padre. Saddam Hussein incendiò allora, mentre le sue truppe fuggivano in ritirata, i pozzi petroliferi dei quali si era impadronito. I fumi di quegli incendi erano oleosi, densissimi, e Oriana, che era lì come sempre in prima linea, se li inghiotti tutti.

Dopo, maledicendoli, diceva che la sua malattia ai polmoni l\'aveva respirata lì. Ma l\'aveva respirata anche fumando, sempre e fino all\'ultimo, sigarette a catena.
A New York ci ritrovammo come vecchi amici di sempre. Il «caratterino» innato di Oriana era allora diventato un cattivo carattere da primato.

Litigava con tutti, insolentiva tutti, querelava tutti. Qualche scatto lo ebbe anche con me; ma io me li prendevo tranquillamente, e lei il giorno dopo mi invitava, facendo finta di niente, a cena a casa sua. Oriana era una cuoca bravissima, e quando era tranquilla tra le mura di casa la sua conversazione era straordinaria, di eventi ne aveva vissuti tanti. Era riuscita a intervistare quasi tutti i «grandi» (ivi inclusi i grandi in cattiveria) dell\'epoca.

Un giorno chiese i miei buoni uffici per farci ricevere da Zbigniew Brzezinski, chiamato Zbig per semplificare, che era stato l\'ispiratore dell\'elezione a presidente di Carter, nel quale divenne National Security Advisor e anche Segretario di Stato. Zbig era mio collega alla Columbia, ed eravamo in ottimi rapporti. Lo cercai di persona, ma lui mi bloccò subito: «Dopo aver letto l\'intervista con Henry (Kissinger), io a quella signora non dirò mai nulla»: finì così. Ma quella fu una delle poche «interviste ritratto» mandate da Oriana.

Dicevo che Oriana litigava con tutti. Un giorno mi telefonò, furiosa, perché avevo invitato alla casa italiana della Columbia, della quale ero direttore, Umberto Eco, a parlare dello strepitoso successo del libro Il nome della rosa. Oriana mi disse: «Ma come, inviti Eco (ometto gli epiteti di contorno) e non inviti me?». Risposi: «Certo, ti invito volentieri, perché tu parli di te stessa, delle tue esperienze, dei tuoi libri, ma non di politica. Perché (aggiunsi secco) di politica non capisci nulla».

Lei, con mia sorpresa, incassò senza vituperi. Non venne mai alla Columbia, né torno mai sull\'argomento. Un anno o due dopo fu lei a farmi uno scherzo da prete. Oriana stava ormai male, tossiva continuamente. La convinsi a farsi visitare allo «Sloan Kettering», il maggiore istituto per la cura dei tumori del mondo.

NOME DELLA ROSA

Non fu facile ottenere l\'appuntamento; ma una bella mattina di una bellissima giornata andai a prenderla a casa e andammo a piedi allo «Sloan Kettering». Lì, come per tutti, un segretario le presentò un lungo questionario da compilare. Oriana si infuriò ( «io sono Oriana Fallaci, non un paziente qualsiasi») e si presentò al luminare con il questionario in bianco; e lui, tempo un minuto, la rimandò a casa.

Oriana tornò allo «Sloan» circa un anno dopo; ma era troppo tardi, e forse lo era già la prima volta.

Negli ultimi anni credo che Oriana abbia conversato en amitié, in amicizia, solo con me o comunque con pochissime persone. Con gli altri, gli avvocati, i suoi editori, le sue numerose segretarie (furono in pochi a reggere) parlava strillando e per strillare contro qualcuno.

Nel suo ufficio alla Rizzoli di New York sulla 57ma strada andava di rado; e chi la cercava lì trovava sulla sua porta un cartello che diceva go away, vattene.
Oriana è stata, negli ultimi anni, una donna molto sola e molto infelice. Anche per questo le volevo molto bene.
